01 - Lambda Old Runtimes

Ensure Lambda functions are running the latest version of program language

Ensure that you always use the latest version of the execution environment for your Amazon Lambda functions in order to adhere to AWS best practices and receive the newest software features, get the latest security patches and bug fixes, and benefit from better performance and reliability. For this reason having the latest runtime is considered a security best practice to and should be enabled. Ensuring this is enabled will help you with PCI-DSS and NIST compliance.

Audit & Remediation

Login into your AWS account
Navigate to the lambda service at: https://console.aws.amazon.com/lambda
On the left hand panel select Functions.

validate that the runtime that is currently being used is in line with the latest supported runtimes found at this link https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lambda/latest/dg/lambda-runtimes.html.
For each function that is not meeting the latest runtime, select the function to edit it.

Scroll down until you see the opting for Basic settings and select the Edit button.

Select a new runtime under Runtime and then select Save.
Repeat the outlined steps for each Lambda function that is running an unsupported runtime.
Repeat the outlined steps for each region you have functions running.
